Historic Cultural Space Design Competition

Historic Cultural Space Design Competition

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has announced its Sejong-daero Historic Cultural Space Design Competition, which seeks creative designs for the site of the former National Tax Service Building, as well as a greater conceptual blueprint for the central Seoul area. The goal of the competition centers on the idea of “creating a space for integration of existing historic cultural heritages and contemporary urban space” via a restoration of the historic essence of the building site, but also with a focus on its future uses. Designs should take into consideration 5,188 square meters of above-ground and underground space, as well as the cultural heritage and significance of the site and surrounding area, such as Deoksugung, Seoul City Hall, Seoul Plaza, and Sejong-daero.

Reflecting the nature of the project, which involves removing the former national tax service building and providing new empty space to citizens, we created an identity that changes from surface to line, from filled to empty.

The goal of this project is to link the site of the former National Tax Service Building to urban architectural heritage and the surroundings that contain various cultural activities.
